Emmet Farnan ensured he didn’t get hydrated by chugging down a beer at every mile of a half–marathon.
In recent years, competitive runners with a taste for beer have been making a legitimate name for the Beer Mile — a race that consists of runners chugging a can of beer between each of four laps on a track. The Beer Mile has become a point of pride for elite athletes such as USA Track and Field runner Nick Symmonds and amateurs looking to set world records. But one amateur has upped the ante for himself by running a beer half marathon.
Emmet Farnan, a senior at Notre Dame University, shotgunned a beer, A Coors Light to be exact, every mile for 13.1 miles and recorded a time, 1:43:42, which is better than most totally sober half-marathoners could muster. While it wasn’t an official Beer Mile–sanctioned race, Farnan was running an official half marathon that was being held locally. Thanks to a last-minute bib purchase from a friend, Farnan was able to register for the April 1 race. Fortunately, he recorded the entire run.
This isn’t the first time a beer half marathon has been recorded. According to BeerMile.com, there is record of a Ghent Beer Half Marathon, in Belgium, that was run last December, with the winning time of 1:34:25.
