‘Mom’ Trades Emmy Campaign for $250K Donation to Planned Parenthood.

“Mom” star Allison Janney and series co-creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre launched the campaign to raise awareness of the threat posed by the Trump administration to Planned Parenthood funding. The pair are expected to make an appearance on “CBS This Morning” and have already started to encourage fans to donate to the non-profit family planning and health care organization on social media.

Janney tweeted praise for Joss Whedon’s efforts, as the Marvel director made a short film imagining what the world would look like without the organization.

“If politicians succeed in shutting down Planned Parenthood, millions of people lose access to basic health services. STD testing, birth control, cancer screenings… how can these be at risk?” Whedon said in a statement. “For so many, there’s an obvious tipping point between hope and despair. Planned Parenthood is a beacon of hope, and anyone trying to shut it down is committing an act of evil. It’s not just inhumane – it’s inhuman. I just wanted to remind those of us with some humanity still stirring how much is at stake.”

The three-minute film highlights the role Planned Parenthood plays in the lives of millions of women in communities nationwide. From scholarships lost to a life-saving diagnosis, the video follows women through critical moments in their lives and shows an alternate reality where organizations like Planned Parenthood don’t exist.

“In Los Angeles County alone, we answer approximately 2,000 calls each day from people asking us for help,” Sue Dunlap, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles said of the organization’s reach. “Across the country, millions of women and men are relying on Planned Parenthood health centres for their basic care – like birth control, life-saving cancer-screenings, and STD testing and treatment. We are committed to being here for them, no matter what. Generous support from our community fuels this work, and we are honoured that the team behind ‘Mom’ is launching this campaign at this critical time.”

Stars have been rallying around Planned Parenthood as the organization has become a target for U.S. President Trump, anti-abortion activists and some conservative lawmakers. Emma Stone and Dakota Johnson wore pins in support of the organization at the 2017 Oscars and Lena Dunham sported one on her 2017 Met Gala gown.

Trump’s health care bill, designed to repeal Obamacare would also bar access to organizations like Planned Parenthood by anyone receiving Medicaid. An incredible blow to the 2.5 million people Planned Parenthood helps every year.

A longtime supporter of the organization, Janney won back to back Emmys for her role on “Mom” in 2014 and 2015.
